Thinking About the Higher Diploma in Insurance Management? Here’s What to Expect

Many insurance professionals reach a stage in their career where they start to think seriously about further study. It is rarely a simple decision. Workload, time pressures and uncertainty about whether a qualification is the right fit are common concerns, even for those who feel ready to take the next step.

The Higher Diploma in Insurance Management, known as the MDI, was designed with these realities in mind. Before deciding whether to apply, it helps to understand what the programme actually involves, who it suits and what support is available along the way.

A Level 8 qualification built for the insurance industry

The Higher Diploma in Insurance Management is a Level 8 qualification developed specifically for insurance professionals. It is designed for those who already have a strong technical foundation and want to build deeper, expert-level capability across areas including underwriting, claims, risk management and the wider insurance business environment.

Flexible study that fits around work

The programme is delivered fully online, allowing students to study around existing work and personal commitments rather than putting their career on hold to do so. Lectures, assignments and exams are structured with working professionals in mind, which is one of the most common reasons people give for choosing the MDI.

Who is eligible

Eligibility depends on existing qualifications and experience. The standard route is open to those who hold the CIP designation and have three or more years of insurance experience post qualification. For professionals who do not meet this standard entry requirement, RPEL, or Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning, offers an alternative route that allows the Insurance Institute to consider professional experience and prior learning. Depending on existing qualifications, some applicants may also be entitled to exemptions from certain modules.

Starting smaller with micro-credentials

For professionals who are not ready to commit to the full programme, the MDI also offers standalone micro-credentials in Motor Insurance, Liability Insurance, and Commercial Property and Business Interruption Insurance. Each module can be completed independently and leads to a digital Specialist badge on completion. If you go on to complete the full Higher Diploma later, the credit gained through a micro-credential counts towards it.

Getting your questions answered

If you are still weighing up whether the MDI, or one of the micro-credentials, is the right fit, the Insurance Institute is running an online information session on 26 June at 12pm covering programme structure, eligibility and exemptions, workload and study supports. For more specific questions about your own circumstances, you can also book a call directly with the team.

Applications for the next semester are open now, with the programme starting in August.
