Individuals who apply for membership of the Insurance Institute (‘the Institute’), whether as temporary, affiliate or nominal members, or existing members when renewing their membership (whether individually or via bulk sponsored renewal by their employer), are required to abide by the Institute’s Membership Terms & Conditions.
These are:
1. By registering for, or renewing membership of, the Institute, you are also registering to become a member of a Local Institute (Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick or Sligo), as indicated by your choice of Local Institute during your application or renewal, or if you fail to make a selection, as allocated to you on the basis of your home address.
- You can amend this Local Institute selection at any time by accessing your Institute membership record online or by contacting the Institute. You must understand the importance of this selection as it is used to ensure that you receive details of appropriate services and events being offered to you which may vary from region to region and are available at Local Institute level only.
2. You agree to abide by each of the following:
- The Institute’s Code of Ethics and Conduct which sets down the principles which all members should follow in the course of their professional duties. Failure to comply may result in the Institute taking disciplinary action against the member.
- The Model Constitution for Local Institutes which is the chief administration and governance document for members of Local Institutes.
- Any Rules and Regulations of the Institute, as may be set from time to time by the National Council of the Institute, relating to membership of the Institute and Local Institutes.
3. If offered any Institute Professional Designation and on acceptance of same, you agree to comply with the Institute’s Continuing Professional Development Scheme (CPD Scheme) which sets out the criteria for the ongoing maintenance of and entitlement to professional designation(s). Regardless of adherence with the CPD Scheme, failure to maintain membership of the Institute automatically removes entitlement to any professional designation(s) previously awarded and accepted.
4. You agree that in the event of your failure to meet all CPD requirements attaching to any Institute professional designation and/or grandfathered status membership, the Institute may:
- Provide information regarding your CPD activity to the CPD Compliance Committee (CCC), which oversees the administration of the Institute’s CPD Scheme.
- Suspend and/or permanently withdraw entitlement to any Institute professional designation and/or grandfathered status membership.
- Remove you from the Institute’s published Register of Compliant Persons.
5. You agree that as a holder of an Institute professional designation and/or grandfathered status membership, that you will alert the Institute and your employer to any obstacles there may be to the completion of your CPD requirements in order to explore alternative arrangements and/or avail of pro-rata CPD adjustments, as may be permitted under the CPD Scheme and/or the Central Bank Minimum Competency Code 2017 (‘the MCC’).
6. You agree that as a condition of holding any Institute professional designation and/or grandfathered status membership, the Institute may:
- Share the following information with your employer (if shown on your Institute membership record), in order to allow regulated firms to comply with their obligations under the Central Bank’s Minimum Competency Code 2017 (‘the MCC’):
- Confirmation of membership registration, current membership and membership status
- Academic/professional qualification achievements and progress
- Professional designation entitlement and status
- CPD hour requirements and completions
- Potential CPD fails and possible disciplinary sanctions
- Outcome of CPD audits and CPD appeals (if applicable)
7. You agree that where your employer is sponsoring your membership and/or any academic, training or CPD services you are receiving from the Institute, the Institute may share the following information with your employer:
- Confirmation of course/programme/module/exam/training registration
- Service registration status
- Module completion status
- Module results (pass/fail only, except if awarded a Certificate of Excellence for a result of 80% or above)
- Professional Designation entitlement and status, if accepted
- Notify high achiever status and entitlement to high achiever award
8. You agree that for the purposes of participation on any Institute academic programme and/or training, the Institute may share your minimal required information with:
- Educational Partners (e.g. ATU Sligo, the Institute’s current Awarding Body)
- Other Professional/Regulatory Bodies (e.g. the CII, if you are a dual member)
- Other Regulatory Bodies (e.g. the Central Bank, to assist it discharging its functions under the MCC)
- Other Relevant Third Parties (e.g. examiners, invigilators, online proctors, lecturers, textbook fulfilment service providers)
- Any Skillnet or Government funding agencies (e.g. HEA, SOLAS)
- Other parties as required to comply with legal, regulatory, statutory or compliance obligations
- Publish your name on the Institute’s Register of Compliant Persons
9. You agree to ensure that your personal, employment and contact details contained on your Institute membership record are maintained and fully up to date at all times.
10 Once admitted to membership of the Institute or on the annual renewal of membership, you will be deemed to have fully agreed to these Membership Terms and Conditions.
