Insurance Literacy in Transition Year: A Practical Introduction to Risk, Sustainability and Careers

Transition Year provides a rare and valuable space within the senior cycle. It allows schools to introduce students to areas of learning that are exploratory, reflective and connected to life beyond the Leaving Certificate. One such area is insurance literacy.

Insurance plays a fundamental role in society. It supports personal financial planning, underpins business activity, facilitates home ownership and enables responses to climate risk. It operates at the intersection of finance, sustainability, regulation and risk management.

Yet, for many young people, insurance is invisible. It is something encountered through a parent’s policy or a renewal notice, rather than understood as a system that shapes economic and social stability. Introducing insurance literacy at TY level offers several important benefits.

First, it strengthens financial literacy. Students gain an understanding of how risk is assessed, how insurance operates as a risk transfer mechanism and how financial decisions are structured. This supports more informed decision making in adulthood.

Second, it connects directly to sustainability. Climate change, resilience and long-term risk are no longer abstract concepts. They influence pricing, underwriting and regulation. A basic understanding of these connections helps students appreciate how environmental issues intersect with economic systems.

Third, it broadens career awareness. Insurance is a diverse sector requiring analytical ability, communication skills, ethical judgement and technological fluency. It offers structured professional pathways, including apprenticeship routes and degree programmes. Transition Year is often the moment when students begin to shape perceptions of future possibilities. Exposure matters.

The Insurance Institute of Ireland has developed a dedicated TY Insurance Literacy micro-module to address these themes in a structured and accessible way. The programme is delivered online and includes applied examples, case studies and a short assessment. Students who meet the required standard are awarded a Digital Badge in Insurance Literacy.

Importantly, the module is not designed as promotional content. It is designed as educational content. Its purpose is to equip students with knowledge and perspective that will serve them regardless of the path they ultimately choose.

As the nature of risk evolves and financial systems grow more complex, equipping young people with a working understanding of insurance is no longer niche. It is practical.

Schools interested in reviewing the module or discussing how it may complement their TY programme are welcome to contact transitionyear@iii.ie.
